A special carbon fiber composite hood used on the Commemorative Edition Z06 only. This is the first time that carbon fiber has been used as original equipment for a painted exterior panel by a major North American original equipment manufacturer.
The hood weighs 9.3 kg/20.5 lb, a 34 percent weight reduction, compared to the production fiberglass SMC hood.
The painted, Class A outer skin, only 1.2 mm/0.048 inch thick, is produced via autoclave from unidirectional epoxy prepreg that cures in only ten minutes at 150 o C/300 o F, supplied by Toray Composites America Inc. (Tacoma, Wash., U.S.A.). The outer skin is bonded to a hybrid carbon fiber/low-density fiberglass SMC inner panel. The hoods are produced for GM by MacLean Quality Compsites ( West Jordan , Utah , U.S.A. ).
